The Philharmonie de Paris was way over the other side of Paris â a modern building with sweeping balconies and a fabulous acoustic.
Virve appeared to know it well, alighting from the car and greeting the security staff on the door like old friends. Sabiâs French was minimal, but Virve was fluent. Her fourth language, Sabi counted. Virve turned on her charm for the venueâs management team who met her inside, appearing to know the stage manager and many of the back-of-house people from days past. There were flowers, best wishes and post-performance schedule adjustments all the way to her dressing room and Virve dealt with it all graciously, even pulling Sabi into the green room and introducing her, in Russian, to the chef there, an old friend.
It was, Sabi realised, the first movement of the eveningâs performance. The maestro was on already. All these people were simply the opening bars of the concert she would lead tonight. She began to see, from very close quarters, just how much the job demanded of her.
Their dressing rooms were side by side and they each disappeared into their own with a quick kiss and a whispered, âcome and see me at the fifteen minute call,â from Virve.
It gave Sabi time for some of her own practice and to change into the gown Virve had bought for her and the elaborate lingerie beneath it. As well as time to settle her own nerves. She was about to head her orchestra from the first chair under the baton of world-renowned Maestro Virve Vintinen in one of Europeâs finest concert halls and her heart was beating double time.
Misaki knocked on her door.
âGorgeous fucking dress, luv,â she drawled. âHad a good day, then?â
Sabi pulled her into the dressing room and shut the door behind her.
âShh! And yes.â She tried holding back a gleeful squee and then decided to let it out anyway. She spun around on the spot, skittering her heels against the floor, bursting with all the buzz sheâd been too cool to release in front of Virve. âOh my god, Misaki, sheâs amazing. She took me shopping â this is Chanel, for fuckâs sake â and weâve spent all the rest of the day in bed. She is soââ
âDonât want to know!â
Sabi hugged her. âI think I might explode.â
âNot on me, luv. Save it for the maestro.â
Sabi laughed. âYou are so gross â and I love you,â she said. The combination of pre-show nerves, endorphins from a day of incredible sex, and pure happiness like she hadnât experienced in ages was welling up inside like a tsunami.
âIâm glad youâre happy.â Misaki sat herself down on Sabiâs tiny sofa. âIâve come to share your dressing room, though. Itâs chaos out there. You have a mini bar.â
Sabi picked up her instrument and swirled to the door. âKnock yourself out. Itâs all yours. Virve wants me in hers.â
Misaki held up her hand. âAgain: donât want to know.â She looked around contentedly and put her feet up on the piano stool.
